Very nice app.

I like this app. I can use it on my fall hikes where I don't bring a field guide because of the weight. The key system is really slick. I'd like to see a couple of inhancements. 1. Once I agree don't show the disclaimer again. 2. Allow inlarging the photo. 3. Add check off with date time stamp. Maybe Gps waypoints too. 4. Add window to allow field notes. My complements to the developers.

Impressed

I too take my hat off to the creators of this app. I am so impressed with everything. With every app out there, you can improve a few things and with this is app there is a few. 1.) make a favorites tab so I can keep my favs close by 2.) I love the idea about a GPS tracking system for rack fungus I find. It would be nice to have a good Idea where I find my Fungi. 3.) have a search by area. If I live in ohio it would be nice to be able to do a search for mushrooms in Ohio and even maybe search for what's in season, or edible compared to non edible. Every app like this should have a search function. 4.) I noticed some fungus does not describe where they are found. Some do but alot just say what type of area they are in but not what area of the workd they can be found in. This would make it easier when going on a weekend Hike to narrow it down to what I am looking for. Again, this is nit picking but this would for sure turn this into one of my front pagers if those things were added in the next upgrade. I still love the app and you can count on me to open this app at LEAST once a day.

Sweet

Very fine mushroom guide with sweet keys. Nice photos and good descriptions including common mushroom names. Thanks, but I agree the developer should delete-or-set-bypass the dire opening warning.

More please

Lots of room for improvements. I couldn't key to Gymnopilus spectabilis but instead got to a Psylocybe! Need more pictures and more species, at least for the ones on here in PNW. It would be so awesome if users can add species & pictures. Otherwise I find this app useful, but it definitely could be better. Peace

Thank-you, thank-you!

Thank-you so much for this well designed app! The key where you can scroll to select cap and scipe shape is a perfect use of the iPhone technology. It makes identification quick and easy. A few requests: 1. Please make it so the picture can be enlarged by touching it then minimized by touching a second time. Several of the news apps have this and it works very well. 2. A place for a notes feature and life list would be great 3. Search by state or at least region would be nice.

Surprised by this app

I hesitated downloading this app because of how poorly made the other mushrooms have been created. I am a beginning mushroom enthusiast and was really hopeful that I would be able to use my iPhone in addition to books to help me identify mushrooms in the field and to learn more when I had the time. Until now, this did not exist in the app store. I still have more to explore in this app but so far I am very impressed by the interface and information. The search function is amazingly innovative. I am confident this will help me in the field and I can't wait to get started. I would have given it 5 stars if it had: 1) more pics for each mushroom and the ability to zoom in on those pics. 2) a search by what's in season based on where I am ( this may be in the app and I just haven't found it yet). Thank you for this app!

A cool tool to help you learn about mushrooms

This is a smart and sophisticated app. I like that its core function is descriptive--identifying the physical features of a mushroom (including spore color!) before offering a possible identification. The mix-and-match interface is super-cool. I really like that edibility is not the main focus, but it's provided as part of a broader set of information. And the developer also points users toward other resources of information. I also like very much that the first thing you see whenever you open this app is a warning screen. Even experienced mushroom hunters should maintain caution and care with their identifications. 100% certainty is the key to a enjoying both the culinary pleasures of wild mushrooms and a long life. I bought this as part of a review of similar apps for a mycology publication that I edit. I was pretty skeptical about how these things could be used. But Simon de Bernard has designed his app responsibly and respectfully and his is the only one I can recommend at this time. I'm sure that there are some improvements that can be made and I look forward to seeing how future versions of the Fungi app will evolve this model.

Wonderful.

This app is the ultimate field guide. You won't be dissapointed.

good start
amanitha

Please be aware that this app has less than 500 mushrooms in the database. It is a good start, but still less than one fourth of your average field guide (like the excellent Mushrooms Demystified, by David Arora). Also, contrary to what another reviewer seems to think, I do not like the warning that opens up every time you open the application. At least there could have been a choice to deactivate the warning. Every child knows that there are poisonous mushrooms! All in all, this app leaves much to be desired, but I am happy that at least someone has started to put a mushroom field guide app together. I hope that the next version will bring us at least 2000 species.

3.5

This is a pretty nice mushroom identifier app.. but its missing a VITAL aspect. COLOR! you neeeeed to be able to put the color of like the cap and stem and whatnot. Also, this is a very nice list of mushrooms. Tons. But its missing some though that i wish were there, a couple being mushrooms from the psathyrella genus. those are a common mushroom, at least where i am. To me it seems like this would be an app for the intermediate to advanced mushroom hunter that already has some knowledge on hunting and identifying. Not a great choice for begginers.
