Freaking Awesome!

I teach PE in the students classroom and I used this app today. The kids absolutely loved it and worked their butts off. Totally worth every penny!

Garbage

My lazy body found a way to beat the system, by just moving my phone with my hand. Also, most of the 5 star reviews are fake. Notice all of the !'s.

Great idea, but poorly executed

Zombies, Run! was a great way to gamify running, but running is not the only part of a workout. Dungeon Runner tried to pick up the rest of your workout by tracking you during called out exercises like squats, punches and shuffles. However, the tracking is poor, the instructions are confusing and the concept is poorly planned. Let's let at each of these individually. You start the game by setting your device 6 feet away from you. It doesn't state what level it's supposed to be, though. Is it on the ground, on a table, or at eye level? In my attempt, I put it on a table pointing up towards my face. I have no way of knowing how accurate I was, since it never prompted me to get in view by showing me a camera view. This would be the best way to start a mission. Once I started the mission, it ran my character to an obstacle and told me to punch. I punched 8 times and my character hit twice and moved on. Was I supposed to hit only twice in slower and more defined punches? Was it 4 punches per 1 avatar punch? I don't know. Next I had to do power squats. I don't know what a power squat is. Is it different to a normal squat? These two things can easily be fixed. For the number, have a counter in the top right that counts down. It will let me know how many I have to do. You could also use rhythmic animations to get me to go faster or slower. For the workout description, you could have settings to toggle it on or off, but simply show an animated outline figure flash in the area above giving a quick animation of how to do it. This can be done in the walk up to the next obstacle. When I was attempting my confused "power squats" I probably did 30 of them before the avatar pushed the block all the way. I don't know if this is how many I was supposed to do or if they were even being recognized, but it's important to give us some sort or reassurance that it's working. A combination of the recommendations above should help with this. The last major problem I have with this is the concept. I don't agree with having to put my device on the other side of the room to gamify my workouts. Why can't the game just give me a workout routine and trust that I do it? I love the idea of an RPG that encourages me to workout and I love the storytelling that six2start does, but this isn't it.
