BACKUP / RESTORE:
Controller is the only app that can create a backup of your setup and restore it afterwards.
You invested hours to create a smart home with a bunch of devices?
Secure the work done and be prepared, if HomeKit reports synchronization errors or your kid likes swipe to delete.

A backup saves the logical structure of your HomeKit setup.
The following parts can be restored:
● Rooms
● Zones
● Device and service names
● Room a device is located
● Service groups
● Scenes
● Automations
● Control views

It's worth it to always have an actual backup!

OVERVIEW:
This new customizable area is shown after app start and allows you to easily create an individual HomeKit control center.
The data shown in control views can be selected explicitly or is provided by powerful smart filters.
In just a few clicks you can create one that shows all power states from light services in the kitchen and living room, grouped by their value.
A great control view to check and control your lights quickly.

A basic set of control views to start with is being created for you.

WORKFLOWS:
New unique feature to accomplish actions not possible before with HomeKit!
● "Hey Siri, unlock the door for 30 seconds."
● "Hey Siri, status of my windows and doors."
● "Hey Siri, turn on the lights at 7 am."

A workflow is defined by a series of steps and can be executed manually, with a Siri phrase or a Siri Shortcut.
You can execute scenes, read or write device values, pause execution, create time-based automations and define a output in the order you need it.
The output is displayed or read out by siri.
By using the clipboard action in a Siri Shortcut you can retrieve the output and use it.

AUTOMATIONS:
An important part of a smart home are automations.
Controller supports the entire HomeKit API and can interpret all common automations, even if they are created by other apps.
Automations are grouped by their name, very helpful to keep track of them.
Experts value the possibility to clone automations and scenes.
E.g. Clone a time-based weekly automation for the whole week and fine tune the time setting afterwards.

VENDOR CHARACTERISTICS:
Your devices have more capabilities than most HomeKit apps show.
Controller shows vendor specific characteristics and let you use them in scenes and automations.

REFERENCES:
In which scenes have you used your thermostat?
Controller shows you that in the device detail views.

LOGS:
Reports current value changes of your home.
Expert functionality to check and understand automations better.

If you’re serious about HomeKit
Cheule

I have 82 devices on HomeKit, and have been using HomeKit for 5 years. My setup is very complex, and it’s easy to Bork something critical. I’ve had to reset HomeKit’s “hub” to get this working again, and then comes the agony of reconfiguring EVERYTHING. If only Apple let you backup HomeKit... enter Controller for HomeKit. It’s the missing link, and has saved my but more times than I care to admit. In fact, I’m writing this review right now because I accidentally removed 5 rooms through Philips Hue’s app (which removed them from HomeKit too!) but luckily I had a Controller backup. Three buttons later, all 5 rooms and over 20 lights and 5 accessories were back.

Great update
GreybeardCT

The latest V5 update is really great. While this has always been a good and very powerful app the new update makes it easier to use. Thanks!

this is the gold standard

If you really want to get into the fine details of a HomeKit setup, this is as close to total control as you can imagine. I compare Controller to a 747 jetliner. The flight deck of a 747 has quite a few controls, they might be confusing at first, and it can kill you if you screw up. But once you learn how it works, you can really go places. :) Version 5 is a major update. At the moment it runs a little slower than the prior version—sometimes the app will just hang for a few seconds...—and there are little tics I need to get used to, but it is overall still indispensable.

Doesn’t work

Had an issue with HomeKit and my backups with this app are useless. Won’t let me restore anything.

Free Features Now Require Subscription
workingintothenight

Useful for rhe occasional trouble shooting but definitely doesn’t warrant a monthly subscription fee to use an app that provides no actual services. Somethings are services and others are products. This one is confused trying to make highly desirable recurring revenue stream. You pay to go through a car wash because it’s providing a service. This app doesn’t wash your car but like a hose you own to wash your own car, this app provides people with a tool to assist in taking care of your HomeKit components and system. No one would ever sign up for a hose subscription service and neither should this app.

Creates scenes not automations
Fletchb

Disappointed this can't do automations which is what I needed. And if you want to edit an existing automation it says it can't because it's 3rd party.

Indispensable tool for HomeKit users
TravisHicks

Tools like this are greatly needed as Apple's Home app does not expose all that HomeKit can do. It's good to now have a version for macOS.

Developer keeps improving this app
Aesterling

I've used this app on iOS ever since it was the first to allow exporting your HomeKit configuration as a backup. I'm appreciative of the new macOS and Apple Watch apps that expand on the functionality of the iOS app and look forward to it continuing to improve in the future.

Don’t trust this app to properly restore
PhantomGlitch

I was very excited by the idea of having an app that could save my HomeKit configuration outside of the Home app for later use in case the Home app broke something in my setup. Sure enough, several weeks after making a backup I needed to restore. I told Controller not to delete my existing automations, but apparently leaving on the two options to “restore missing automations” causes the app to overwrite what is in HomeKit anyway. Now I’ve lost all my advanced automations and will have to rebuild from memory.

Sluggish Scrolling UI
ae6666

The app cannot be considered production-ready due to: * The interface is Lagging while scrolling on mbp2018. It is difficult to use. * Annoying popup to get the pro version (pro items should be hidden entirely for better user experience) * Nav Menu bug with the selector hanging while opening the item with no items (clicking on cameras while having none set doesnt allow to select Accessories, Scenes, and Automations. All other menu items below work. One has to Kill the app in order to restore the menu functionality.) * The input control for the numbers is very uncomphortable to use & it is uncommon among the existing apps (hello legacy js/webview) The regular slider/input box would be much better.
