Chesslike: Adventures in Chess

Chesslike takes the familiarity of chess and puts it into a fantastic new world of possibilities. This game is NOT chess. The rules have changed, and even a pawn can take up arms to become the new king. Dive into fun puzzle levels, or take some time and conquer an entire castle by assassinating the king. When you've had your fill, create your own levels to challenge your friends with the Level Editor at Chesslike.net.

A new take on chess
edcasey

This ain't your GRANDPA'S chess! I'm just kidding. That's a terrible way to start a review. It's like this: Chesslike is super interesting. It takes the basics of chess and how each piece moves and then throws it into a dungeon. So you'll take the moves you know and have to apply them to whole new boards. Nice smooth learning curve with new mechanics like warp doors and power ups introduced along the way. Played the first dozen or so levels so far and I'm hooked.

Poor

Found the AI to be too cheap. It's very easy to get stuck between two moves looping forever. Overall, not quite what I expected. The description says "not chess" but this is clearly chess, just on different boards. Was expecting something a little more dungeon like. Oh well, another 2 dollar waste on the AppStore.

Great modern take on chess

Loved the desktop version and so happy I can chess on the go. Super addictive!

Wretched. Skip it.

Seriously regretting my purchase. This game is awful. It feels like an app quarter-baked, like an alpha build of a game still early in development. The UI is sloppy and very nearly broken, gameplay is inadequately explained, and the game doesn't even bother to mark your progress as you go. Garbage, garbage, garbage.

Different is good!

Essentially is is puzzles you solve using chess pieces and chess moves. The AI isn’t super smart, but if it were I think many of the puzzles would be unbeatable - so I think the AI is just right. Graphics seem a little retro, not as slick as the iPad is capable of, but that said it doesn’t distract from the game play. I would be nice to see which levels you have completed. The player levels are a nice touch, but they can only be made on the web version.

Brilliant idea! Well executed

Imagine playing chess on a non standard board like a maze. It's really perfect for a bored chess lover. Those knight levels are roughy though!!

Broken

Can not see the pieces on the board. iPhone 6+ Broken

Buggy
Reitveld

- 'next game' sometimes does not work - defeating a player does not 'stick' as they revive and surprise kill you. - no undo button - no save points - colors for showing move positions are hard to see in some levels. - no explanation as to enemy movements. (Pawns can move backwards) - hard to know where to start in the overall levels map. - this was a recommended game on AppAdvice. I advise to not buy it until updates are released.

Good idea... bad execution.
Bluedrake42

Definitely a cool concept, but the menus are buggy and the replay ability is low.

Flawed.

Entering a new map is a blind affair that puts you on a square that is being attacked about half of the time. This is a frustrating way to instantly end a game. It’s random luck since the pieces respawn. Sick of dying instantly when I re-enter a map so I deleting it.
