Reviews

Almost there...

First chess app that can have pgn databases created via the app as opposed to downloading them. This makes reading through chess books a pleasure, storing games and reviewing them months later. Those of you who used pocket fritz on your pocket pc's will recall. One little problem with this app though. When playing black side it is very buggy. Selected pieces fall to left of board, disappear, and then app crashes. This doesn't happen when playing white side. I suspect that this will be fixed with an update. When it does I will celebrate by devouring more chess books. Thanks!

Great app

I like ChessDB a lot, especially the databases that come with it. Very instructive for beginners. Good graphics too. Only problem I have with it is that the instructions for saving a database to my iPad from my computer was a little complicated, but I got used to it. Good job!

Data base!
Michael the Monk

Easy way to keep a chess database on your iPad. It's very easy to download a new database to your iPad. Is the database going to be periodically updated? I see 2008 is the latest year of data. I could manually download the games, but a seasonal update would be a 5-star bonus. Otherwise, it does what it claims, and it works. Thanks!

Best chess database
Symmachus

For the study of chess, this app really can't be beat. The presentation is clean and the DB is deep. Best of all, it can grow with your particular interests. Only problem I have had is with the Annotated Immortal Games since most of those games will crash me back to ipad springboard. However, they are just a fraction of the huge offerings in this app so I can't really complain. Chessdb is perfect for you if you simply want to immerse yourself in great chess games. One thing that would be nice would be the ability to tag certain games for interest or simply mark them studied. But, overall, nice job!

Excellent Companion To Shredder
AppFind

Have both the iPhone and iPad versions. Game collections are great. Really awesome platform for leisurely or serious game study. I really like seeing the historical games. As a coach I will be recommending this app. it's not a perfect app, but only good things will come from future versions.

Very good, a little buggy
Chris Rittelmeyer

Very nice app. 3 reasons for 4 star rating instead of 5. 1. Bug: When attempting to follow a variation line by clicking the variation button and selecting the next move from the popup, the app crashes. 2. Annoyance: Loses board position and even the selected game when switching between apps. 3. Would be nice to have: A search function that searches across all databases.

Database of bugs
Sirniteob1

This application is a good start. BUT about a third of the games crashes the program back to desktop. if you have games that have not been debugged why include them. Maybe this application should be $0.99 not the price they want! This needs an update badly!!! Buyer beware!!

Pretty cool, but could be better

This app is a great way to analyze your chess game collection on the go. Not bad for a 1.0 version, but still missing some features. First of all, you can't edit games once they've been created, only play them back. IE no annotating games, no creating variations. The search field will let you search on basic stuff like player name and location, but not board position or MCO (opening) code, which is much more helpful. There's no real stats on any of the games in a collection, like number of times an opening was played, overall wins/losses, etc. It would also be nice to have a least a basic chess engine you can run to give commentary on the current position, or even annotate a game for you.

A bit chaotic and disorganized
dougfisher

This app needs a way to star or bookmark certain games you're studying. As it stands now it has thousands of games that are jumbled up and thrown together into giant piles without much order. Coming back at a later time to study games and positions is much like trying to find a needle that has been reinserted into its haystack. This is even with the search function which doesn't narrow your search as well as it should.

Terrible ECO implementation!
Steve96913

C'mon, for the ECO database, one move or two moves for a opening line?? This part of the database needs to be revamped! One opening line is consisting a sequence of moves in the printed version! One complete row is one opening (for white and black sides). All the variations/analysis are marked by superscript numbers... Do not just scan all the pages of ECO, then use this program as pgn reader to show move by move! All the goodies og ECO are destroyed! I have to read ECO the old way... If you want to buy this app for ECO, you can eliminate this app from ur shopping list!
