Our next release will include settings recommendations for iOS 9.3.3+. We are already collecting the data for this, so stay tuned!

** PLEASE READ BEFORE INSTALLING **

Carat is the first app to generate personalized recommendations for improving your battery life. After observing your use of the device for *a week or more*, it will start to generate reports just for you. You should open the app once every day or so, with an Internet connection turned on, until you start seeing results.

Although Carat uses Location Services (thus displaying the little icon), it is NOT using your GPS and is NOT running in the background. The app uses almost no power.

** Thank you! **

Ever wondered why your battery is draining so quickly? Just install Carat, open it every few days with an Internet connection turned on so it can send data to our servers, and within a week Carat will start recommending Actions (just for you!) and even predicting the improvements you will see. Although Carat cannot measure energy use directly, it infers what apps are responsible using advanced machine learning methods.

And it's free!

As you use your device, Carat occasionally takes measurements and sends them to our backend servers in the cloud, where we apply cutting-edge algorithms to determine what steps you can take to use less energy. By collecting snippets of non-personal data from a large number of devices, Carat does not need to run continuously in the background. Nothing we collect identifies you, personally.

Carat will tell you which apps generally use a lot of energy and and those that specifically do so on your device (but not on most others). This does not make an app 'bad', but this advice can help a user improve their battery life.

== Carat Features ==

- Action List telling you how to improve your battery life and by how much
- Device information detailing exactly what data we are recording
- Reports apps that are using lots of energy and whether that is happening on other devices, too
- Detail views let you dive down into the data
- Low-overhead sampling requires almost no energy or CPU
- J-Score tells you how your battery efficiency compares to other users
- Sharing features let you post/tweet/blog about your experience; more users means more data which means better recommendations for you

Carat is under active development by a team of researchers in University of Helsinki. We are constantly making improvements, adding features, and giving you more knowledge about how your device is using energy. Remember, knowledge is power!

Reviews

Something changed
chrischris716

When I first downloaded this app, it did work well to identify issues with my phone for both the battery and memory. However, the app doesn't seem to like the past iOS updates. I haven't seen any recommendations or suggestions for how to improve my phone lately. It keeps saying to open it frequently, which I tried but nothing changed. This was a 5 star review for the app prior to the late iOS 6 & 7 updates. Currently, it a 1 star. The rating is an average for past and current performance.

Doesn't seem to do much

I don't get why it takes a week to tell me what my battery hogs are. That pretty much renders the app useless.

Does nothing

I have had this for two weeks. I do what it says. I leave it running. I constantly refresh it. It has shown me nothing. It does nothing. Don't waste your time

Feel like a rat in an experiment

Does anyone else think that this app was written by the U.C. Berkeley *Psychology* Department? How many times will someone run an app without any payoff whatsoever? I must have provided them with countless data points. There's no evidence that Carat does anything other than report my behavior.

Not like it USED to be

I have had this app for two years. It used to be a great app. Now all it tells me is that there is nothing to report and to keep using it. Again, I have use it daily for two years with no problem and all of a sudden, within the last two months, it's worthless. And yes, I have the updated version. So much for a good thing.

Argh!!!!!!

This apps did nothing! I followed the directions and opened the app often for data collection in order to support the analysis and resulting recommendations .... however I was the only one doing anything. Either I mis-understood the app's purpose ... or something wasn't working correctly. I found this app to be a total waste of my time.

Does nothing

I have had this app for a month. I do everything I'm supposed to.. Open it several times a day. It does absolutely nothing. It has never shown me one thing. I wonder what it is doing with my collected data. Not helping me. Deleted the app. Total waste of time.

I think it's dead.

Several iOSs ago, this app was very helpful. I've been running it everyday for a month now and it doesn't tell me squat. Too bad. I really need an app that can truly help you save battery life and not just tell me best practices.

Simply junk

Does nothing, reports nothing. Don't waste your time.

No reports after a full month
Ralphp21

Nothing. Nada. Same exact percentages and battery life predictions every day.
