Great "The Sentinel" homage on iPad, but a bit rough on control.

Capita is the best looking iOS version of the 80's classic "The Sentinel" so far. While there aren't many, the high resolution, nice metallic textures and clean menu put it up top. Simplicity is key in this game's visuals and Capita doesn't try to fix what wasn't broken in the classic. Gameplay is true to the title it pays homage to, calling for quick strategy, resource management and panic-inducing scans from the Capita and it's Minions. Control starts out great for a slow-paced game, with an interface that only pops up after holding your finger on the screen for a beat. Unfortunately, once the landscape gets more crowded, the interface gets too slow and cumbersome for fast thinking. The small pause for the menu to pop up becomes a hindrance. And if you accidentally call it up, it's a fumble to get rid of it. Also, there is a picky tedium with aiming to absorb or build Cubes and Copies. To build a stack of cubes, you must: 1. Aim at a space. 2. Hold for menu. 3. Tap to build cube. 4. Re-adjust aim on the cube you just built. 5. Hold for menu again. 6. Repeat... It gets clumsy when you have to hop around the board avoiding multiple scans. It's even worse if items are caught in an enemy scan and you're trying to reabsorb them before the Capita scatters them all over the map. If there were smoother control options designed around the iPad interface, this would be the perfect game. Perhaps utilizing multi-touch to call up the menu instantly, or maybe allowing the player to build/absorb by simply aiming at the stack as opposed to re-adjusting aim every time. I still recommend Capita strongly to Sentinel fans, though. And I think the developers are fans themselves, having made a great start. Here's hoping that future versions bring the challenge strictly from the Capita and its Minions itself and not the controls!

Close to the original

I fondly remember The Sentinel from my Commodore 64 days. The gameplay is still surprisingly unique and fun even today. The controls are a bit fiddly but you get used to it pretty quickly. I’m hoping for better controls in the future and a little more atmosphere. I’m not feeling the Sentinel's presence as in the original. He’s still there but I don’t get the tension of seeing him move. He's rather static.

It's The Sentinel, with pretty good touch controls and smoother if about as detailed graphics. Which is exactly what I wanted, so.
