What is this app?

Since the description of this app does nothing to tell you what the app actually does, I’ll take a shot at explaining. The capital “AR” is for “augmented reality,” meaning that you use this app to peer through the world through your iPhone/iPad’s camera while certain recognized places are augmented with historical views, images of artifacts from LAPL’s archive, and information about what you are seeing. Think Layar (an app that actually bothers to describe what it does in its store listing). ARchive LAPL is more tailored, though — it has thematic “guided tours” that are rather like scavenger hunts, taking you through parts of LAPL’s Central Library as you explore some of its history or a thematic set of interesting points. The next time I find myself at Central Library, I’m going to give this a try. It sounds cool. I’ll update my review then, too. The point of this review is to give feedback that the useless app description is off-putting and a barrier to understanding what this app does. People who might love it will not get it, and so ignore it. What a wasted opportunity.
