Fly Hawaii

Verde;

Fly Hawaii is fun basic flight simulator and offers a lot for a free, ad-free game. It features 42 aircraft options; a few are free to start, but most are either earned as you win points by completing missions or may be purchased. Play takes place in four scenarios: day, dusk, fog, and storm. Day is free to start; others also may be earned or paid for. Play options allow accelerometer adjustments, boost, wind, difficulty levels, hints, sound effects, and more. The fun challenge is in sampling different aircraft, landing sites, and weather conditions. Aircraft are identified by picture (not name), so only aviation buffs will know which is a BoingBoing B-36 and which is a Guac-14 Cielo. The rest of us will find that each of the 42 aircraft handle differently... some are slow and sluggish, some are fast and sensitive, and all have personalities to work with. A great example is the red helicopter (marked 680 on the tail and WH-MBB written backwords by the rotor). You'll find this helicopter has the unique ability to magically fly through buildings - but only the buildings at the Honolulu and Kailua-Kona airports. While on the subject of helicopters, you would think that helicopters can land practically anywhere, like maybe a beach. But all the aircraft, helicopters included, can land only at designated places such as airports or aircraft carriers. Attempts to land anywhere else result in fireballs. One airport, Kaneohe, has a bug I've encountered with various aircraft: after successfully landing the altimeter indicates I'm still in the air. Parked on the ground, "distance 0," but altitude still several feet off the ground. Aircraft of all types can mysteriously levitate in Kaneohe, and it means that many missions there cannot be completed. The game uses three airports on Oahu: Honolulu (HNL), Kaneohe (NGF), and Kalaeloa (Kapolei) (JRF); one on Kauai: Lihue (LIH); one on Hawaii: Kailua-Kona (KOA), one on Maui: Kahului (OGG); and an imaginary one on Niihau. Because Niihau is a preserve for native culture, it feels wrong to fly anything other than a helicopter there (residents use a helicopter for medical evacuations, etc). Oddly, the civilian airports on Molokai and Lanai were not used. Other mission destinations include three naval vessels at sea and a private yacht. The scenarios add an interesting level of challenge. Day is first, free, and a good place to start. Dusk is the beautiful Hawaiian sunset, and the game retains true north so at times you can be "blinded" by flying into the setting sun. The fog and storm settings are a particular challenge because in the game no one on land, including the airports, switches on their lights. Buildings and runways are blacked out, which leads to some very tense flying. A bit of fun comes with a seaplane earned at around 375,000 points. It looks like a blue whale crossed with a manta ray and the pilot straddles it like a jetski. View options are limited with this aircraft, challenging you to use fewer controls and in new ways. Hint 1: the compass will help guide the player in the direction of the mission's destination, but does not account for objects such as buildings and mountains that may be in the way. Some aircraft may find it easier and faster to go around an island than rise over it and descend on the other side. Hint 2: the "distance" gauge is not in any recognizable unit of measurement, but does give players a basic idea of remaining distance to a mission's destination. Though the compass helps point the way to the destination, the distance gauge will prove helpful finding the correct landing spot within an airport facility when flying a helicopter or blimp. As a former resident of Hawaii I am disappointed at the lack of recognizable landmarks in the graphics, but maybe they would be in a PC/PS3/online version of the game, not in a free iPhone app :-) Happy flying!

Fun game

I love it very much. I like flying pontoon planes.

Stupid waste of time

Poor controls, completely inaccurate, defies the laws of physics. For a flight simulator, it doesn’t simulate flight. For a tourist app, there are much better details with Google Earth. What’s the point if this game??

Fun but...

Ok so the graphics are pretty good and there are a lot of fun planes, but it kinda needs more content. I unlocked every day time and aircraft in a day. It’s fun but not realistic at all, too. The gear goes up for you, but all it does when it goes up is that it disappears. No actual upward movement. Also, when you go slow you don’t stall. There are no flaps either. It’s still a fun game but if you’re looking for a realistic simulator.

I love this game, but I don't.

AddiePrime.

I mean... this is a pretty fun, good game. Though, there is some ups and downs. I'll start with the downs. 1. I think it's boring. They need to add different locations like, Seattle or New York. 2. I think the islands need more detail. And 3. I think you should be able to design your own plan. I mean that would be cool! And now for the ups. 1. I love the colors of the plans. They are a nice, great color. 2. The plans have detail. (But why not the islands?) And 3. The landing is easier than most games. I appreciate that.

Awesome

Only thing i wished this game had was a SR-71 and a F-22

Great game

This is a fun game to pass the time. If you want this game you should get it and should try it. If you in school or on the couch this is a fun flight simulator. This game will most likely not be a game you play forever but can be addictive for a while.
