Great! The Latest Research Reports
ECatPlay

This App is well done. As advertised, it brings the latest research reports (ASAP articles) from the ACS journals to the palm of your hand, as abstracts, with the option of retrieving the full text as well (if you have a subscription or by purchasing an individual document.) It is not a means to read the reports that have already been published. The ACS did a good job of making this easy to use, and behaving as expected: graphics are provided in an appropriate resolution for viewing on the iPhone, the normal ways of expanding and rotating the article work as expected, and (at least so far) the article intros and abstracts load quickly.

Outstanding App

As a military officer I want to remain current on all news, including the latest in science. This app has become essential to my daily commute. It allows me to scan through the latest news and articles with a very clean, user friendly interface. I wish that more app developers took this clean approach to app design - its an absolutely superb product. ACS has hit a home run - again. One complaint though - I'm not sure why ACS is charging for this app? I see it as a tool for ACS to deliver paid content. That content is worth far more than this $2.99 app. It allows me to "see" an article that I may end up buying later for $30 that I wouldn't even see if I were not using this app. I'm guessing that there are potential users who won't pay for the app just on principal since they already pay to access ACS content.

I thought after the April update, this app would take advantage of Ipad's large screen. But it is not! Please make it full screen on the Ipad!

Good but needs to improve
Mike_the_tiger

I just downloaded this app and immediately found few shortcomings. There is no way to save the articles you find (PDF files) to the iBooks or PDF reader in the iphone. Also there is no way to send those searched articles to someone else. It's good to find articles from this app and send them immediately to your advisor when you work in a research group. If this app can be modified to that purpose, I'll give it 5 stars but right now it's 4.

Wonderful!

This App is a wonderful way to browse cotents of your favorite journal or articles ASAP. It is a much quicker way to browse contents than RSS feeds or even a web browser on a small mobile device screen. It includes the title key image just like browsing on a web browser. If you click on a title or image, the abstract open up. You can then email the article citation or open pdf of the full article (if you have subscription rights). I would like to see a way to tag articles you have already browsed through in articles ASAP or table of contents, and I hope this will come in a future update. I have seen no other chemistry publisher with anything like it. ACS leads the way again!

This service is not available!

I have had this app for mode than a month now. It worked only for the first couple of days. Now a message appears that says "this service is temporarily unavailable".

Basically an RSS feed
TheSafetyDude

If you subscribe to any of the RSS feeds provided you a fundamentally getting the same information. I like the iPad layout. It is smooth and easy to navigate. It is nice to have the mobile version. I especially like the availably to share directly to Twitter or Facebook. Well worth the money!

Great app with a few shortcomings.

As an ACS member and Ph.D. student in chemistry, I felt like I just HAD to get this app for my iPhone (and iPad someday). The design is awesome and the readability is very good. However, there are a couple things I wish it had... 1.) Ability to download .PDF files. As the description says, you can cache files for 48 hours for offline reading. But why not the ability to download? I use Goodreader to annotate articles and Dropbox to organize my library of articles. If you can download and save the .PDFs on a computer, you should be able to through this app as well. 2.) Ability to search within .PDF documents. This would be a very useful feature (and most likely solved with being able to download the .PDFs). Until these two features are added, I'll only be able to give this app 3 stars (as it is currently not much more than a standard RSS feed). Otherwise, this app is very well designed and the inclusion of C&EN News is a good touch!
