Beautifully Balanced Basics – Nubs' Adventure Review

Wow. The graphics are simple, but the gameplay is fantastic. All of the little things add up: multiple ways to move through the levels make it feel like you're really exploring. The basic platforming feels great. I love that there are places that seem out of reach, like it's an actual environment and not just a puzzle you are going to complete. The world is full of nice little reactive atmospheric things, and the music fits in perfectly. You're not just stuck in one style of movement, the way the gameplay works you get to play several kinds of games in one. A great example of the kind of depth you can create when you focus on gameplay over graphics and churning out content. And the story is light, but it sets up some dramatic tension right away, and characters throughout provide little bits of insight and color to the world, without dumping a lot of cheesy dialog on you. Honestly if you like action-adventure games this is really a fantastic modern interpretation of the genre. My only critique is my fingers sometimes lose the left/right buttons. An adaptive virtual d-pad might be better. Or just some haptic cues or something when you drift off the buttons.
