A Deep And Compelling Story About Human(Pokemon?) Nature
Cela08

YellowCutieMonsters, on the surface, is a simple platforming game about Pokemon wearing hats. However, if you look deeper into the game, as I have, it reveals the game to be a masterpiece of wordless storytelling, leaving me with a lingering feeling that I may not have done the right thing. From what I have gathered, the game takes place in a world where humans do not exist, so it may share a universe with the "Mystery Dungeon" series of Pokemon games. This would likely be set far after the canon games. In this world, resurrective immortality has been discovered - upon death, you simply revive again, and can continue on the level you left off even if you run out of lives - and the serum has been administered to all Pokemon (except possibly Spheal, as it has taken a neutral stance throughout the game.) Due to this, however, ghost Pokemon, as the spirits of the dead, are not affected by the immortality serum, and have been driven to near extinction. Duskulls and Gengars appear to be to most common ghost-types left. In a world where they were slowly dwindling to their end, they fled and claimed their own havens. Spheals, as fellow outcasts, went with the ghost-types, some opting to try and defend them, others opting to mind their own business and not get involved. And then we get to the "heroes" as they are called. Each knew the same thing - the lands owned by the ghosts contained countless riches yet plenty of danger. I have given each a name, and a speculation on their motives based on their hats: Rosie the Pikachu: Born into poverty, she spent her life working in the blazing hot sun on a field - you can see she is also terribly sunburnt at all times as a result. Hearing of the treasures within the ghostlands, she braved up her courage and ventured within to provide for her family. Brenton the Vaporeon: Raised in an out-of-the-way port town, his father was always out sailing. One day, he was taken hostage by pirates, and Brenton never saw him again. He was then determined for the rest of his life to buy his own ship and become a sailor himself, because that's what his father would have wanted. Keter the Rattata: The only one not fueled by the prospect of money, little is known about Keter other than that his purpose is getting rid of what few ghost-types are left. He is ruthless, despite his small size, and also completely mute - nobody knows if it's because he can't - or won't - speak, or if the gas mask doesn't let him. Quentin the Pidgey: Once an upper-class and incredibly rich, his pampered life took a turn for the worse as, after a life of staying low-levelled, he was almost effortlessly robbed dry. Aching to regain his fortune, he headed to the ghostlands, with the simple goal of getting rich. Beth the Shiny Bulbasaur: A quiet and reserved type, both she and her non-shiny sister are ill with a fatal disease and only enough money to cure one, and Beth could not cope with the thought of only one of them surviving. So she decided to get the money for the cure at any cost, no matter how frail and pained she is. With each having their own reasons to brave the ghostlands, plenty of money was scattered about, just as they were told. However, the ghost-types hated them and they hated the ghost-types, so there was no way to avoid confrontation if they were intruding on the ghost-types' lands and stealing their money. Many a time the "heroes" had to commit murder to progress... or just to get some stray coins, as they grew corrupted by their own greed. Eventually, the game will start punishing you for being greedy. Coins in places that will waste your time, coins over pits, coins concealing spikes... All traps set up to halt your hero so they will stop thieving. And, while at first, killing the ghost-types may seem noble, you may notice something. They don't harm the Spheals at all. Sometimes the Spheals help you, sometimes they hinder you - but they're Pokemon just like you. It's just that you're an intruder and a thief, and the Spheals are not. Even after going as far as to ransack Level 13, which might be the main home of the ghost-types, you can keep going and fueling your hero's greed and harming the ghost-types in their own home. But even after all that, your score? It will always be zero. It was all meaningless slaughter in the end.
