Retrospecs

A retro computing / pixel art camera app.
Category Price Seller Device
Photo & Video Free John Parker iPhone, iPad, iPod

Retrospecs lets you convert/capture images so that they appear as they would on a variety of home computers and consoles from the 70's, 80's and 90's.

Simply take a picture (or select one from your photo library) and you can display it as it would appear on a wide variety of computers and consoles from the 80's and 90's. There's currently over forty "emulated" systems including the Sinclair ZX Spectrum, Commodore 64, IBM PC (DOS, CGA, EGA and VGA), Commodore Amiga, Atari ST, Sega Mega Drive, Nintendo Game Boy and even the original 1984 model Apple Macintosh. If that's not enough you can also create your own custom systems based around different graphics engines, capabilities and colour palettes.

To best present your blocky masterpieces, you can tweak each image using a selection of dither patterns and image enhancements. Once you're done, share your images with friends and foes alike. Or just keep them to yourself.

Fantastic app! Hits me in the nostalgia feels.
Chuubi13

This app is amazing! I've been looking for something to fill in the Gameboy Camera void that I have so desperately wanted on my phone, and this app delivers. Not just delivers, blows it out of the park. The amount of customization is phenomenal and the filters really give an interesting and different perspective of the world. My favorites are the IBM DOS, Gameboy, and Amstrad CPC Green Screen. If you are an arty nut like me or just want your selfies to stand out like an amazingly nostalgic piece of magic, then I would highly recommend picking this up. It's pretty sweet.

Great App.

Fantastic pixeliness

I found this app while looking at some related ones, and in so glad I did. This is one of the best photo manipulation apps I've used, and I've been through quite a few. The number of emulations available is just mind-boggling. The Amiga and CGA ones are my favorites.

Great app!

Awesome retro filter app! I would add an option to use the aspect ratio of the original picture though.

Amazing concept and execution
Pinachina

Every filter is very authentic to the original system. The creator definitely did their homework. Great execution and style. Very easy to use. I can't ask for anything more, except maybe Game Boy Camera support..! Now to find a way to hook that old beast up to my iPhone..

Super fun camera filters based on your memories

Lots of powerful tools to make your pictures look as old school as you want

Stellar

This app is one of the most polished in this "genre". It's fun, intuitive and has a genuinely clean interface. I'll be sad if it's no longer updated. But this app is top shelf in emulated retro displays.

Incredible!

Just might be the best retro-tech image app ever.

Fantastic 8 bit/video emulation

I've tried them all -- this is the best app for pixelation emulation. I have used it to create comic books, graphic novels, and book covers. I wish it was an after effects plugin! Please continue development on this fine app! Love it immensely!

It's good.

As of the moment I write this review, I will have had various versions of the iPhone for 5 years. In that time this app remains the only non-game app I have been willing to spend money on. There's a huge amount of variety to the systems and preset filters built in, and the customization options (for modifying the rules of an existing preset, or making your own rules) just add icing to the cake. I've especially liked being able to view current photos through a Game Boy or Virtual Boy lens.
