Encouraging Young Girls!!!

I have been a lifelong fan of Nancy Drew and Her Interactive. I am now a 21 year old woman studying Informatics in college and I am SO EXCITED that an app like this exists to encourage young girls to think logically and code, especially with my role model Nancy. Perfect for young girls who want a fun app and mental stimulation. My younger sister and I will continue playing this game!

Game makes STEM appealing; No real coding skills

As an owner of every Nancy Drew game that Her Interactive has released, I have been extremely excited for this game for months. I fully expected that it would be geared towards a younger audience, so this is not my issue with the game. Pros: Plot moves along quickly enough for young children to pay attention to. Shows STEM field in a positive light and depicts the benefit in every day use of STEM (it does seem a bit forced at points, but again this is likely because of the intended audience). Characters are interesting and diverse, coming from different racial backgrounds and different "cliques" in the school. There are places in the game where outfit changes are optional, but instead of a traditional dress up game, these mini games are aimed at perfecting disguises for the girls to wear in different areas. Cons: Her Interactive advertised this game for nearly a year under the pretense that it would teach young children basic coding skills. The points in the game where programming becomes necessary to the plot fall short for me, and much of the game is actually a series of different hidden object mini games. Overall, I do think the game achieves what it set out to do: encourage young girls to get interested in STEM when they are often otherwise discouraged. However, I don't think Her Interactive needed to advertise the game in the way it did to get people to buy it, and I think their decision to claim that it teaches basic coding skills while proving no actual coding was a poor one and the main drawback of this game. I would, however, still highly recommend it.

As a former elementary teacher, I am always looking for new and exciting games which challenge early learners in a creative way. Nancy Drew: Codes & Clues is engaging and challenging. It has a running story line which encourages the young readers to follow along with the narrative. This understanding will maximize their pleasure when they become successful in helping Nancy Drew and her two sidekicks, Bess and George, solve the case. A second component is in outfitting Nancy so she can blend into the setting in which she finds herself. I think it would be even more fun if the player could outfit all three girls. A third component is the "seek and find" adventure of collecting clues. This is done very well. The objects are increasingly more difficult to find as you progress through the multiple stages of the process. I like this because attention to detail is an important skill for early learners. It causes them to slow down and really absorb the picture in order to locate the items necessary. The fourth component is to literally program the movements of a robotic dog to aid him in collecting clues which the humans cannot reach. I found this very challenging and must admit it sometimes took me a couple of times to get him where he needed to be. This actually made it more fun for me! So, fun, engaging, challenging all adds up to a five star rating.

While cute, I wish I'd waited for reviews to buy this game. It should be free seeing as though there is literally one mystery to solve that it took my 8 year old son an hour to solve. And that was with all stars and trophies. As MAJOR Nancy Drew fans, we were very disappointed. If I could do it again.... I wouldn't. Waste of money.

Fine – but not much there for the price

My seven-year-old daughter enjoy this game but finished it completely in about 2 1/2 hours. Since the price is a little bit higher than other games, we went back to see if there were other levels – nope, that's it. She did have fun but the shortness of the game was pretty disappointing.

Her Interactive has done it again! Nancy Drew codes and clues is wonderful for children. I bought it being a long time Nancy Drew fan and my 5 year old nephew played. He had a really good time and it was great to see him working through the puppy puzzles. He really had to think and practice his sequential reasoning skills. Nancy Drew games helped me develop as a kid and now they're helping my nephew. Thanks HeR interactive!
