MIDI Guitar is the World’s first app to transcribe guitar playing into MIDI in real-time, with latency and accuracy comparable to expensive and inconvenient hardware MIDI guitar solutions.

MIDI guitar is 8 years under development(!) and based upon new advanced in polyphonic pitch detection and –prediction technology that can accurately recognize guitar playing and -articulation with very low latency and without spurious hits. The technology has been tested by thousands of beta testers.

MIDI Guitar use Virtual MIDI to drive other iOS synth apps or Garageband. It can also use WIFI-MIDI to communicate with Mac or PC digital audio workstations in a frictionless setup. Cable-based MIDI to control hardware synths or connect to DAWs with lowest possible latency.

In order to use MIDI Guitar you need a iPhone 5, iPad 4, iPod 6 or later. You also need a guitar interface for best results. We recommend a digital interface (using the lightning connector) over analog (via headphone jack), preferably with input gain control. Using an acoustic guitar with the built in microphone works for some purposes but is not optimal.

The free version will interrupt now and then, asking you to buy an in-app purchase. There are two in-app purchases. The first one gives you the full guitar rig and unlocks everything in the app EXCEPT the possibility to play external synths. For that you need the second in-app purchase, in addition.

2&1/2 Stars, could be five!

I have emailed the developers: There are some very basic things *missing* from this app. Here is a list: • interapp audio/audiobus/auv3 support • routing. there is very little routing capability for multi-input/output devices. supports only inputs 1&2, output is not saved in presets. (if you have anything but the most basic audio interface this app may not work for you, simple because there is no way to select inputs other than hardware 1 or 2!! no iaa no audiobus, etc) • app does not refresh output list. so the only way to get it to show new/different apps is to close it and reopen. seems minor but particularly annoying given that it always opens to the same default preset. there is no option to revise the default preset or to reopen with previous setup. ...If you are familiar with many other apps you know that these features are all commonplace. it's disappointing to see such amazing technology packaged in such a seemingly thoughtless way... Devs: you got almost there! why did you stop short?

Amazing Breakthrough!

I have used Guitar to MIDI products for years, including hex pickups and complicated pitch to voltage converters. The fact that this product tracks as well as it does is nothing short of astonishing to me. It tracks many complex chords and fingerpicking without glitching on my setup. You do need to turn the sensitivity way down to get this, otherwise you get tons of ghost notes and mistriggers. To the app maker: in addition to adding Audiobus compatibility and other future features you mention, keep refining your latency, pitch detection, and core capabilities. You are at the head of the pack, don’t give up your lead position.

I really can't complain...

No, this is not a fully functional Guitar Midi experience, you will have lag and missing notes depending on the linked Midi app. But seriously, just the fact that it comes close is worth it for me. Even the You Rock guitar has the same funky issues. I like being able to explore new sounds in a guitar playing format. Only reason 4 star and not 5 is because it does not seem to recognize some apps that other Midi interface apps connect with fine (ie I could not get it to link to or recognize FL Studio Mobile or MusicStudio.). Overall, very cool!!!

Impressive

I have been playing around with this app for a couple of weeks now, and the poly recognition is amazing. I am only using 3gs, so not enough cpu to run app and audio on phone, but - it is working great doing just the midi conversion and sending to imac over wifi. There is some latency with 3gs, but for strings or pads it is fast enough. Have tried electric and accoustic, with both guitarjack (1) and new iRig stomp. All combinations work very well. IRig stomp is perfect for this, with big knob for levels, and bypass. I was planning on upgrading iphone soon, and this app alone is strong motivation. Layering strings on accoustic adds another dimension to my playing. On imac i am using mainstage, and for strings / pads i have a few patches all using korg m1 sotware. An important aspect to keep in mind is how sensitive your audio app is to the velocity of notes it receives. For those who reported app was missing notes, i suspect this is your most likely culprit. Mainstage shows velocity of notes received, and you can adjust the sensitivity so it will pick up notes of lower velocity. This made a huge difference, and really revealed the power and accuracy of this apps poly note recognition. This is truly impressive.

If you're going to try and work this, pay attention to the app's instructions: they say only use iRig guitar interface, and that along with iRig Midi is working pretty accurately for me. Really nice. I've played guitar since I was 5, and have never properly learned piano. This app let's me use my virtuoso picking skills on the best new soft synths, not perfectly, but good enough to lay down better midi tracks in Ableton than I ever thought I could. It's the bees knees, I love it.

Impressive, but...

Really, when you know how expensive a midi guitar system is, you are amazed by what this app does... It simply blew my mind. I'm using an iPod 4G, and it works pretty well. My only beef is latency a tad too long (but that might be the hardware), and if I play a chord with 4 notes or more, often only 2 will play. Hardware again... It'd be nice if each midi output option could be purchased separately. I really only care for virtual midi output...

Mind blowing

I found this app while searching for Polychord. I didn't expect much, but wow was I surprised. I've been using various iPad wifi midi keyboard apps to control Kontakt 5, and was thinking of buying an actual midi keyboard controller. Now that I've tried this app, I no longer want or need a keyboard. I wish there was a mod wheel button, but other than that this app is incredible. I thought about getting a Roland guitar synth adapter, but at $800, plus being limited to one guitar, it's not worth it. I bought full version within the app, and I haven't had this much fun for $19.99 in years. You haven't lived until you've controlled a full orchestra with a guitar. Amazing.

Great idea, but not musically useful

Too much lag/latency/glitch. Worth about three bucks, not twenty.

I thought I would try this app out, thinking it was too good to be true... It sort of is and yet it isn't. The app glitches and hits ghost notes too much for me to use it for serious tracking, but it actually does what it says. True polyphony, even if it glitches slightly, is a real accomplishment and I eagerly await the vst version. Oh and slight latency issues too. Definitely worth a demo try to see if it works for you.
