Every so often the VPN will stop connecting and I will need to restart my device to get IVPN to connect again, which is pretty frustrating. If it worked more consistently it would be a better experience.
Appesque
Upon restarting, the VPN never will reconnect, tested using the new OpenVPN protocol. New protocol also has issues searching between cell to WiFi, etc. It just says connecting. Only solution is to disconnect and reconnect. However it is better at longer-term stability once established. My experience.

First off, IVPN is the best VPN I’ve tried yet — and I’ve used many (Private Internet Acess, ExpressVPN, Perfect Privacy, Encrypt.me, etc.). It offers top-notch speed, serious security with OpenVPN encryption, advanced features such as multi-hop connections, and a transparent company culture that lends it credibility and trust. (Thus being named best VPN by the very thorough review site the Wirecutter.) IVPN is also one of the only VPN services to not rely on an affiliate program to encourage fake positive online reviews; it discontinued its program after being notified by “That one privacy site” that it was leading to fake reviews. The other big players in the VPN business generally encourage these sort of dishonest reviews to increase their market share. This gives IVPN considerable respect in my eyes. (Never trust an online VPN review unless you know and trust the author’s integrity! I recommend the Wirecutter’s VPN review for more information. Privacytools.io and “That one privacy site” are also great resources.) IVPN’s macOS app lives up to their reputation and is nicely designed — I’m very satisfied with it. It’s not as good as some others I’ve used, but I don’t have any problems to complain about. In contrast, their iOS app — the subject of this review — is disappointing. The design is immediately off-putting: the extreme size of the black space on the top and bottom of the screen makes it clear the app hasn’t been seriously updated in years. No useful features (connecting to untrusted networks automatically, multi-hop connections, changing ports and encryption methods, obfuscation, ad and tracking blocking, automatically choosing the fastest server, etc.) are offered. It does its job well and without hiccups, but just doesn’t compare favorably to the competition. I very much hope that IVPN plans to overhaul this app ASAP.

Can’t signup through the app. Will be buying from a different vpn provider that allows seamless signup. Why require a website to signup?

This looks like a really good service, which received a great review on the Wirecutter website. But I didn’t get very far by using the app. When I try to create a new account in the app and start the free trial I get an error message. It asks me to go to their website to sign up. I plan to give that a try when I have more time.

"Always on firewall" might be impossible to implement on iOS, but it would be nice to know nothing is leaking while the vpn reconnects (on every unlock). Also multi-hop is coming soon I hope. But it's great to finally have a native app.

You can’t sign up through the app. When you attempt to use it, it instructs you to sign up online. Moreover, when u actually do use the app for long periods, you’ll find occasionally that you drop connection. During those brief periods every so often, the app does not block unencrypted network activity, so the app simply doesn’t work.
Perspicacious
IVPN has delayed making an iOS app for so long (even though they charge a lot for their VPN service) that I just assumed they didn't care about the majority of their users. It turns out they still don't care. This app doesn't display how busy the VPN servers are, doesn't allow multihop (even though we're paying for it), and doesn't enable VPN over http. That's right, when you need VPN most, to secure your phone on public WiFi, IVPN is least likely to work. Most public WiFi allows only http traffic (port 80) and this app won't let you set that. The IVPN desktop app allows VPN over port 80 and multihop and shows how well each server is responding. Given how poor the app development is at IVPN, I don't expect them to fix this on the iPhone app anytime soon (e.g. years from now if lucky).
