The Class I character set contains the 300 most commonly used characters in modern Chinese, the Class II set contains the next 500 most frequently used characters, while the Class III set contains the next 782. The Radicals set includes all 189 character radicals.
You can view common usage examples for any character or radical to help you learn and remember unfamiliar items. For any character, you can view a list of common compound words in which it is used. For any radical, you can view a list of common characters that it forms. Both types of usage list include characters, pinyin, and English definitions.
In addition, fifteen theme-based sets each include 25 commonly used words relating to everyday categories such as academic subjects, animals, beverages, body parts, business terms, colors, countries, food, weather, and so on.
Characters can be displayed in either simplified or traditional form. The cards in the character and radical sets are arranged in order of increasing complexity, making it easy to work your way up from simpler to harder. Cards you get wrong are automatically reinserted into your current deck. A final score is displayed as a percentage at the end of each session.
When you answer an item incorrectly on any test, it is added to a personal Review List, so you can go back and work on less familiar characters separately at any time. Review List flashcard sessions incorporate a spaced repetition algorithm, so that you'll encounter more frequently the items that you've missed most often in the past. Items are removed from the Review List only after you've answered them correctly several times in a row in different review sessions.
I love the app..I love the theme categories. I would give it 5 stars, but I think there is a bug.....The app does not seem to recognize when you give correct answers. Therefore, I keep seeing the same cards over again and not getting new ones.
This is a great tool for studying Chinese characters. Easy and fast, I can eliminate the ones I know and focus on the ones I don't. Using it on the IPad - the first version had a bug which didn't recognize correct choices, but that was quickly remedied with the upgrade to version 1.1. I learned Chinese as a missionary over 20 years ago. This is the perfect tool for me, reviewing essential character sets and having fun getting back on top of the language. Worth the two bucks several times over!
Flashcards are a well-known way to improve your vocabulary, and this implementation, with its multiple choice format, is excellent! Very useful!
I am a second year Chinese student and this is an invaluable tool for my Chinese learning. In class we are learning phrases and vocabulary, but we have not focused on learning the radicals at all. This will undoubtedly help me to understand and interpret the meanings of characters that I haven't seen before. Not to mention, this app has a very unique and easy to use interface. The multiple choice flash card method is much more effective than the normal flashcard method where you are "on the honor system" to say whether you got that character right or not. I love it!
After trying several dozen competitor products, it is clear this tops them all. It is intuitive, and allows tailoring many dimensions in learning and review. The ability to quickly monitor, alter, and watch progress in near-real-time permits the user to repeat only what is needed for quickly reinforcing only why is needed.
1. Doesn't offer traditional radical character set. 2. It should give immediate feedback for pronunciation. These 2 shortcoming are serious enough to lower the score by 2 stars. I have higher expectations of CS from using their PC app and website.
This is a simple, elegant app that is very effective at doing what it sets out to do. I like the unusual multiple-choice interface and the fact that the characters in each set are arranged in order of complexity, so I can work on the simpler ones first. This is a great value for someone who wants to master the 800 most common characters and/or the approx 200 radicals. I hope in a future version they'll add the next 800 characters--though it will probably take me a few months to get these first two sets down cold!
