Deepest war game made so far for iPad

rogo727

This game is amazing. For those of you wanting a Manual please visit the matrix or slitherine web sites to download in good reader. I don't have the PC version but they say no options were left out in the port. I have been playing the 1914 scn and it is very challenging so far. I would highly recommend using a stylus pen for this game.

Fantastic

Easily the best grand strategy game on an ipad, Great War is a masterpiece and a joy to have on a portable device. I hope this is just the start of serious wargaming on ipad.

Full PC wargame made by pros on the ipad

This is a wargame with all the depth and playability included. Check out matrix games forums for details but know that you are buying a complete and excellent product. This is not angry birds this is WW1 strategy well executed.

Excellent game crippled by terrible interface

Ik777

As others have said, very deep gameplay. However, I am too often frustrated by the difficulty of moving units, and frequently waste movement points when trying to select other units, but end up causing them to swap places. Having an undo button would solve this and make up for the clumsiness of controlling this many units on an iPad screen. In addition, due to the large scale of the map relative to the iPad screen's viewport, it is extremely difficult to know if you have activated all of the units you have without at least some kind of a warning, and impossible to know when fully zoomed out. While there is a warning for having not activated a single unit of a country, one should be available to warn you also for having not used individual units. I absolutely adore their other title Panzer Corps. If these two features, similar to those from Panzer Corps, were added to CTGW, it would be another 5-star masterpiece in my book. Until this happens, it will be a game with potential, but better enjoyed on a PC. <fingers crossed> :)

Good, but needs some improvements

Bede19025

It's a real wargame on iPad. Grognards will love it. A few improvements would be nice. How about an undo button like in Panzer Corps? Too easy to make mistakes and then you're stuck. No link to a manual? This game is much too complex to leave that out. No next -previous unit button?

Seems rushed to market!

For all the reasons other reviewers have already mentioned and, "seriously", no PDF game manual?! And without an undo button I'm shelving this game for now. It does have lots of promise. Add the features that should have been there in the first place and a PDF game manual and I've raise it to four stars. I mean, come on, it is a $20 game!! The PC version comes with the PDF manual and it's $20 too. I was excited when I heard it was available for the iPad but now I'm mostly disappointed having played it. I'll check back in several weeks.

Too Ambitious

I love all Slitherine's games so I was anxiously awaiting this release. Having attempted to play non-stop since midnight on release day, I now have to qualify my feelings about Slitherine: I love all their games...except this one. Impossible to figure out with out a manual, impossible to fully understand, impossible to play. So, if you've dealt with 3 impossible things today, why not round it out with this title?

Needs some work

CTGW is already the definitive iPad game for WW1. Those interested in the subject will no doubt find an approachable, interesting and enjoyable game. The reason this currently gets two stars is because the interface (never a Slitherine strength when it comes to ports) needs some work and show stopping bugs. Regarding the interface, Some menus are hard to see, the text needs to be adjustable. It's also entirely too easy to mis-move a unit and there is no undo button (that I can find at least). It's also distressingly easy to accidentally declare war on someone and several times a turn I am clicking a button that no, I do not in fact want to declare war. But one mis-hit on the two small buttons and there is no turning back. But the biggest problem I have faced are bugs that literally freeze up the game and don't allow you to continue. There is an auto save which allows you to go back a turn but not only have you lost all that time planning your turn. You have to do things significantly different with the hope that whatever logic loop the ai is stuck in doesn't repeat itself. However there is likely no workaround and I have had to abandon two campaigns after dedicating hours upon hours to it. Very frustrating and until fixed, I sadly would not recommend this game to play. Clearly YMMV.

Enjoyable

Fun game decent replay ability. Nice to see more serious strategy war games coming to iPad beyond the tiresome shoot-blast-tower defense garbage. If you enjoy the old style "thinking" war games, this will be well worth the price.

Refund

After spending $20 I am mad as heck....As soon as the game becomes complex..When Russia joins in...the AI turns become eternal...The game simply locks up and a single turn takes 20 minutes with 19 of it being the AI sitting...Unless you have a simple and effective fix save me the frustration and refund my $$$
