Apple Heart Study

The Apple Heart Study app is an innovative research study that uses data from Apple Watch to identify irregular heart rhythms, including those from potentially serious heart conditions such as atrial fibrillation (AFib). This study is being conducted in collaboration with Stanford Medicine to accelerate discovery in heart science.

- AFib is one of the most common forms of irregular heart rhythm. It can lead to blood clots or heart failure and is a leading cause of stroke. AFib affects tens of millions of people — but many of those people don’t experience symptoms, so it often goes undiagnosed.

- The Apple Heart Study uses an app designed to notify participants if an irregular heart rhythm is observed.

- The app will passively monitor your heart rate along with your heart rhythm. If an irregular heart rhythm is observed, the app will notify you.

- After the notification, you’ll receive a free video consultation on your iPhone with the study’s medical professionals for further analysis.

- The video consultation connects you with a board-certified, licensed primary care provider from American Well* - 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

- In some cases, the doctor may recommend a BioTelemetry electrocardiogram (ECG) patch for additional monitoring. The patch will be mailed to you at no cost and should be worn for seven days. The ECG data gathered over this period will be used to determine whether AFib or another type of irregular heart rhythm is present.

- Participation in the Apple Heart Study is voluntary. After you download the app, you’ll be asked to give your consent for participation. The heart rate sensor data you provide over time will be collected by Stanford Medicine and Apple for research analysis. Apple will not have access to any information that can directly identify you.

Requirements:

- Requires Apple Watch Series 1 (Fall 2016 model) or later with watchOS 4 and later. The Apple Heart Study does not support the original Apple Watch.
- iPhone 5s or later with iOS 11 or later
- You must be a U.S. resident, 22 years or older, and meet other study eligibility criteria as described in the Apple Heart Study app
- You must provide your consent to participate in the study

Laying on the couch Friday night I went into afib and my watch notified me to seek medical attention. I went to the ER and I’m fine but I just want to say THANK YOU Apple.

App does exactly what it’s supposed to do.

I read many of the one star ratings to determine if I should download this app. In my opinion most are not valid with regard to the app itself. I am a 61 year old man who just bought a series 3 watch. I downloaded the app followed the instructions and was immediately accepted into the study. At this point the only requirement is for you to wear the watch. have no known heart issues. The app tells you how many days you’ve been in the study and how many heart rhythm data contributions you’ve made. It is also supposed to alert you if an abnormal rhythm is detected. If a problem is detected you have the option to speak with a doctor from the study. You can also simply withdraw from the study with a simple keystroke in the app. I plan to stay in the study as long as they want me.

All went smooth!

Downloaded the app on my iPhone 7+ and then also downloaded to my Apple Watch three with no problem. Not sure why some people are saying that the study is closed back in May because I just joined a week ago and was accepted immediately, and it’s July...? Hmmm. I haven’t had any problems with my battery going dead quickly like some people have, and in regards to some of the questions I have seen people ask... The app requiring access to your camera and microphone is clearly stated if you need to speak with a doctor. If they determine you have an ab normal heart rate you have the option of speaking with the doctor using video and audio. Other than that I think it’s a pretty neat opportunity to be part of a study and also find out if you have a heart problem.

Age restriction
Yesi?

App said “17+” but when I downloaded the app it asked for my date of birth and said I couldn’t use this because I do not meet the age restriction. YOU MUST BE 22 OR OLDER TO USE THIS APP. Only found this out after downloading it.. maybe next year I guess.

Good Study

Easy to sign up and is. Just wish they gave you some kind of feedback relating to the stats they are collecting on you. Feedback would be an added benefit

Horrible app! Doesn’t work & you can’t see your own results!
TattooTia

Don’t waste your good iPhone & Apple Watch memory on this bull crap of an app. It does NOT work! You can’t see your heart rhythm logs...at all! The customer service department lacks good customer service when you call. It is an all around fake app and a waste! I give it 5 thumbs down! Worst app on Apple!! ?????

Almost a five

The heart study app is amazing! I used this because I do have a heart condition just not congenital heart failure or afib. My doctor thinks this was a good idea to help me. The only issue I have which downgraded this to a 4, I’ve update to new phone and the app made me start back over from scratch. It did not move any info over from previous iPhone...

I’m surprised this doesn’t ask about weed usage
Thorinosdh

I feed weed affects my heart rate more than nicotine. Kinda interesting

Gender Change
Jalagic

I signed up as a female, went on the app a few weeks later showing as a male. Called the number in app stating the app reversed all gender nothing on an update. Other than the app runs in the back ground. I’ve contributed 264 rhythms in 44 days.

It was working.

Everything was fine until I purchased a new watch. Now the phone app won’t acknowledge the watch by saying I need a watch, while the app on my watch tells me go to the phone app to get started. I’ve deleted and reinstalled on both devices which did nothing. Sooooo yeah. Not working.
