Experience the origin of a whole universe!

Akalabeth, World of Doom - was developed in 1978 by Richard Garriott, creator of the famous Ultima series. It marks the beginning of computer role playing games, and is one of the first programs featuring 3D graphics on a home computer. It's also the first computer game featuring Orcs and Balrogs.
This app is an accurate replica of that genre defining classic, bringing the feeling of a true legend to your iPhone, iPod or iPad. You can't get more retro than this!

GAMEPLAY:

✭ Exact recreation of the original Akalabeth - World of Doom!
✭ Find the castle of Lord British and enter extensive 3D dungeons on your quest to become a knight
✭ Become a fighter or a mage and increase your stats during your quest
✭ Fight increasingly dangerous monsters the deeper you advance into the dungeons of Akalabeth, until you finally encounter the legendary Balrog
✭ It's still as immersive and fun as it was 30 years ago!

FEATURES:

✭ Elegant readjustment of the original keyboard controls for fluent touchscreen gameplay
✭ Original retro graphics and sound take you back to those glory days...

ENHANCEMENTS:

A few helpers have been carefully added in consultation with Lord British himself, to make the Akalabeth experience more enjoyable on your iPhone. If you are after the authentic experience, deactivate them.

✭ Autosave - re-enter the game where you left it
✭ Start near castle - have a quicker start into the game
✭ Minimap - find your way through the dungeons
✭ No secret passages - don't get confused by hidden doors
✭ More food - don't starve to death all the time

OPEN FEINT:

✭ Visit Lord British once in a while to receive highscore points for raiding the dungeons
✭ Compare your scores on the OpenFeint leaderboard

FINAL HINTS:

✭ Search for Lord British's castle to receive a quest
✭ Buy lots of food in the beginning
✭ Beware of Gremlins, they will steal your food
✭ Press the upper right corner for advanced settings

THANKS:

Our thanks and dedication go to Richard Garriott, also known as Lord British, for his consent and support, and for all those hours we spent in Britannia...

Not bad but not the original Apple II color version
Valour

This is a pretty good port, but it's the black & white PC DOS port and not the original Apple II version. The Apple II game is actually in color whereas the DOS port was in B&W. This also lacks horizontial support forcing you to play in a small vertical posistion which is difficult on small iPhone and AppleTV Airplay.

Great game
captin_overkill

Great game, love it. Needs to be updated to ios 11, or cannot be played:(

Great rendition, doesn't work currently
the original ianoid

Please update the game so that we can play it again! It was really well done with the mini keyboard and emulation.

As retro as a game can be!

If you're into retro gaming experience, Akalabeth is for you! Really nice look & feel, great attention to detail up to the 'click' sound of the retro keyboard. Nicely done, and pure nostalgia on my iPhone! (plus I think it's the original screen resolution - iPhone 4 might already be too hires for this)

True classic !

It's nice work. I like classic keyboard sound. Game play is also good. It also provides mini map in dungeon. Pretty helpful. Two thumbs up !

Perfect port of one of the original CRPG's
stutzjon

Wow! I have to say this is a really fantastic port. The key interface system is perfect, providing the keys you need when a certain action is required. It feels like I'm playing the game on an Apple II and not an Iphone. This adds to the feeling of nostalgia and elevates the port to really feeling like the original. The game itself is a really simple RPG. I love these kinds of games having grown up with CRPG's like Bard's Tale, Temple of Asphai, and Phantasy. If you can appreciate this app for what it is, it's definitely worth a download. Kudos to Quantum Toast for such a faithful port.

Minor Bugs
Tai23

Good classic game with one major problem. Occasionally in a dungeon, I will be walking, then all of the sudden I'm stuck in a cooridore with no doors. I have "No secret passages" set to "On". Only solution is to "Restart Game" in menu. :(

Ultima 0, hail Britania!!

Every RPG'er should pay homage to the Ultima series. Thanks for creating this app! Hope to see future Ultima releases!

Excellent, ultima underworld 1+2 next?
Link6746

This is an excellent classic, a wonderful game that keeps you coming back with its random seed based environment generation (hint: there's a full page of "lucky number" to generate the seed with) and simple equipment/food/power concept. Fully recommended and I wait for other FPRPGs by Garriot, such as the Ultima Underworld series and System Shock (though ea owns those- listen up EA!)

Nostalgia

Great app. Reminds me of being a kid again. It used to take my Apple ][ 10 seconds to draw the Balrog on it's screen.
