Slow gameplay, continues time gated

The whole UI is horribly slow. Words fade in, and the fades easily take a second to finish. The biggest problem though: if you run out of hearts (lives), you are time gated from continuing the game. I paid for the game, what's with trying to get me to play less of it?!
