Thanks to Alex from theSkimm for a speedy reply with how to resolve this issue. No more audible alerts in the middle of the night. Solution was to toggle off event alerts in theSkimm calendar. Prior review: I’ve been subscribing to this service for a couple years - liked the content. Then the Olympics started and alerts have begun in the middle of the night. I can’t turn on do not disturb on my phone as I’m on call for my job. This app should be timezone aware and not stick things on your calendar in the middle of the night.

Not a review of the actual product/app. The button to indicate I don’t want to be tracked before using the app doesn’t work. The button to change my settings so I can be tracked does work. The only way I was able to get around the broken button was by using a long-press on the app icon to open the lastest skimm, not something I expect every user knows. Happy to change the review to be about the actual product, I just don’t like dark patterns forcing users into allowing you to track them.

I used to love the Skimm. But their refusal to disengage in harmful diet culture rhetoric and promotions is becoming problematic and discouraging.

Update does not allow for landscape view which was my “go to” for reading on iPad. What??!! Why??!!

I truly appreciate the condensed format of the news that theSkimm offers. I had found it ideal for someone looking to stay informed on a fairly well rounded variety of topics, but the “news” reported has increasingly become politicized and opinionated, while still be “reported” as factual. In the past, theSkimm would present both sides of different issues, leaving the readers to draw conclusions. Now, theSkimm will occasionally print blatant misinformation and state that highly politicized and controversial ideas such as defunding the police are “necessary”.

Seriously, the ads is at least 1/3 of the content, and they are disguised so you have to read it halfway to realize they are not the kind of information that you are willing to spend your 10min reading time on in the morning. And yes, you are paying to read this. Bravo.
